Alright, so it looks like we've pretty much got everyone is going to join us thus far, so I want to welcome you all today to our black prep talk studies in stem session. My name is Lydia Gill and I'm the recruitment officer, equity outreach and support at the University of Toronto and it's my responsibility and I'm dedicated to supporting black students access University of Toronto and all of our undergraduate programs across the three campuses.
I've sort of created this space today as an alumni who is now pursuing my second degree at UTI. Knew that there were certain things that I always wanted to know as a black student sort of pursuing University studies in Ontario. And there were things that I don't think that I got when I was in high school. I didn't get all of the information that was great and would have been useful to me. I've created this space really for black spoons students to be able to come and hear about the breath of stem programs that are available at UFT, but also to hear about the diversity of supports and resources that are available to you as a Blackstone at University of Toronto.
And today's session will cover all of those areas. So as we move through today's session, I do want to provide some logistics for for the way the session will run. We do have a lot of information to go through, so if you logistical pieces, one if you are in need of close captioning, please find the closed captioning button in the top right corner of your screen. You can turn that on whenever you're ready and that will support you with closed captioning for the remainder of the session.
Now our agenda for today is jam packed and we want to ensure that you guys are aware of everything that will be taking place. So our first part will be a bit of a brief introduction to you've T. Then we'll have a bit of a faculty and campus overview. And Fortunately today I have representatives from all of our undergraduate faculties that have a stem that have stem programs.
And in our in our sort of last session will then come back on to sort of speak to you and walk you through a bit about financial support applications and admission. We will then open up for Q&A at the end of the session where you'll be able to ask and ask any questions that you may have. Now a few pieces around the Q&A, we know that there's going to be a lot of information that you're getting. I do encourage you to just jot down any questions that you may have and hold them to the end of the presentation. We do have about four or five presenters joining me today that are each going to speak for about 3 to 5 minutes to their faculty.
Flloyd Noronha
05:04:56 PM
Hello Hello!
And we want to get through all of them before we start opening up for questions, so please drop those questions down and we would be happy to answer them at the end in the Q&A. So as before, just before we head into our present into the actual presentation you will notice in the chat that I am joined by a colleague named Floyd Floyd will be supporting with any links and answering any really quick questions that you may have and providing links and supports for that within the chat so you won't see any questions that you put into the chat he just said hello, hello Hello Floyd, he just he will notice that.
When you submit a question, it will appear right away. That is because it is a moderated chat, so just keep in mind we do see your question. You don't have to keep sending it in, but we will be holding those questions to the end. We may not get to all of your questions, but again, keep in mind you will get a follow up email for me and I would be happy to connect you to any of the faculties or myself. Happy to answer any of your questions.
So I'm going to turn off my camera as I head into the presentation, but you'll still be able to hear me.
So let's talk a little bit about the University of Toronto and provide you a bit of an overview as to you've team now. the University of Toronto is Canada's best University and we have an incredible reputation for academics, faculty and research.
Not only are we Canada's best University, were also one of the best best universities in the world and you can be assured that your UFT degree can take you anywhere after graduation.
Our students, graduate and faculty have been responsible for groundbreaking research and discoveries that have made significant impacts, goat, both globally and locally. For example, you may have heard of Banting and best researchers at UC who discovered insulin in the early 1900s, and as a result when the Nobel Prize in medicine, but our community is continuing this legacy with groundbreaking research to this day.
A good example of some of the current research that is emerging from Utah is from the ideas lab, which stands for indigeneity, diaspora equity and anti racism in sport. The ideas lab was founded by Doctor Janelle Joseph who is pictured here and it aspires to explore these areas of racialization and Indigeneity and sport including a wide range of global and local physical culture experiences. Doctor Joseph is an assistant professor of critical studies. An recent indeed indigeneity in the sport in sport, in the faculty of kinesiology and physical education.
Where she developed a course on recent sport in Canadian society. Doctor Joseph is also an alumni from the University of Toronto and Aloran scholar. And so this just gives you a bit of an example as to some of the groundbreaking research that's continuing today at the University of Toronto, and that is being led by, but it's being led by our black faculty and black alumni.
Now, this sort of brings me to our sort of our main point of this session, and it's really to introduce you to the community that is available at the University of Toronto, and once unique about some of the offerings that we have.
Now the University of Toronto is a unique University in the sense that we are one University with three distinct campuses. We are the largest institution, but the greatest part of To know is that even though we have 70,000 students are not studying in one place. This allows students to have choice on where they want to study, and regardless of which of our campuses are students call home. They're all part of dynamic communities at the University of Toronto, we boast the largest offering of science programs in all of Canada, and you can study this in the Sciences at all three campuses.
So what does that exactly mean and what does that look like? The across all three of our campuses. You can find unique stem offerings you will find bachelors of science programs in the faculty of Arts and science at the Saint George campus, the Mississauga campus, and the Scarborough campus. Now Additionally, at the Saint George campus. In addition to our faculty in art science, we also offer two smaller unique faculties with the stem focus, which are the faculty of Applied Science and engineering and the faculty of kinesiology and physical education.
Now I will have. We will now move into our faculty and campus overview, where you'll actually hear from all of those undergraduate faculties that offer stem that have stem offerings by first colleague that will join me today is Deborah parent from the University of Toronto, Mississauga. Deborah. Feel free to jump on now and join us and speak to us about stem at you TM.
Very excited to be joining you this evening and I really want to thank Lydia for opening up this platform to all of us so that we can speak with you and share what we have about the University of Toronto. And I'm going to talk about Mississauga. So once again, my name is Deborah, period. I am a recruitment officer at you TM and I have to tell you it is an absolutely amazingly stunning campus. So we have about 225 acres of greenspace that surrounds us.
And I want you to keep in mind that that green space is also a lab as well. So if you're looking at stem, we do do research in that green space also at the Mississauga campus we are a bit more state of the art as well, and we have about 15,000 undergraduate students. So that means that we're also a very tight knit community. I'm going to talk a little bit more about our community as I move through these slides. So what do we have in store for you when it comes to the Sciences? So we have chemical and physical science.
Computer science, math and Statistics. Life Science and psychology. Now taking a look at this list something I want you to be aware of is that when it comes to prerequisites, the prerequisites required. It depends on which campus you're looking at. So at you TM specifically, if you're considering our programs in science, please look at what we require for prerequisites that may be different from Saint George or from the Scarborough campus as well. The other thing I want you to think about.
Are the approximate grades required so at Mississauga we've got chemical and physical Sciences. We're looking at mid to high 70s computer science, math and stats. We're looking at low to mid 80s. We're looking at low to mid 80s as well. For Life Science, an for psychology, low to mid 70s. That's the range to consider your application, but please do your best to be competitive. That's really what you want to do when we're looking at this.
So now moving on there are some unique programs at UTM as well. Only programs that you can take at the Mississauga campus and forensic science is one of them. So this is in fact a science. You'd be earning your honors of science with forensic science. We have friends against apology, which is the study of bones for enjoyment biology, which means that you're looking at a crime scene and you're looking at those materials like blood samples, fingerprints, chemistry.
When we're looking at forensic chemistry where going to try to identify what materials are located at a crime scene? Psychology actually kind of looks at the psychology within a jury, let's say, and then there's forensic science, which you can do as a major or minor. These programs that I just talked about you would take as a specialist, and when you go into forensic science, it means that you're a Ward of the court and you are going to be looking at a crime scene and you're going to be the voice for whatever victim.
Was at that crime scene I also want to bring up for you communications, culture, information and technology. You wouldn't be earning an honors in science, but it would actually be in the arts, so we have CCITT. But Digital Enterprise Management is what I do. Want to bring your focus to. If you have an interest in engineering. Let's say systems, databases, technology, management, business, even digital enterprise management could be a way for you to go.

Interested in exploring programs at U of T Mississauga further? Check out the Program Plans here: www.utm.utoronto.ca/program-plans/program-plans
Exclusive once again at you TMI want you to take a look at this website I have here and you can also easily find this on Google UTM. Does have program plans and the program plan is going to lay out what your four years could possibly look like within a particular program. So that includes different courses. If there's job shadowing, global experiences, careers that you can move into, so program plans is a great option for you to take a look and see what those four years could possibly look like.
I promise you they must be great now we've got those guaranteed entrance scholarships available at Utmb. Specifically, we're looking at 90% to start with those guaranteed scholarships upon entry and when we get up to 95% in higher. You could be awarded up to $12,000 over your four years of study, but I want you to remember this is for this scholarship specifically, so we're not looking to you to have 90% in higher to actually be.
Admitted into your program of preference. This is for the scholarship specifically. I also want to talk about Ashley. So Ashley is currently in Neural Science at UTM an she wanted me to send along this little quote for you. You TM offers unique tight knit community as I mentioned and unparalleled research opportunities. I have had numerous opportunity to conduct research alongside professors who are well renowned in their field of study.
You TM is taught me that my career can be multidisciplinary and self determined. So Ashley, she's one of my BAE ambassadors. I'm going to talk about that in a second. She's also a Pearson Scholarship Award winner, so let's talk about the community that we have available for you at you. TMI. Personally, have put together the black access to educational excellence program for short. I like to call it Bay and within Bay there are different.
Opportunities they have for black students to engage with you TM when they're making their decision with regard to high school or even in Grade 9. Starting that process to see what their options are on post secondary. So those include presentations with your high school. If right now you're in a high school you think you have. Black peers would be interested in speaking with me. Please get in touch with your high school counselor. Ask them to contact me or you can contact me directly.

Also has a black youth mentor ship program, an equity and diversity office is also available and we have Rhonda McGuigan, who is the chair of CCITT and she is the special counsel to the principle as well. And how can I possibly ever forget the African students Association? So please jot down my information, get in contact with me if you want to know more about the black community at you TM. OK, so I'm now going to pass it on to my colleague Kyomi Duncan.
At the University of Toronto Scarborough campus by everybody.
Thanks so much Deborah. All exciting, wonderful things happening at U of T Mississauga. Now it's my turn to tell you all about the options available to you at the University of Toronto Scarborough, and I'm really pleased to join you today because I certainly remember being in high school and being a first generation student and not knowing anything about post secondary studies, college or University. They know the experience can be quite overwhelming, so I'm glad you're joining us today because you're going to see just wonderful array of.
Options available to you across all of the various divisions at the University of Toronto and then you get to choose a place, a program that's going to be the right fit for you. After you've T Scarborough campus were located in the eastern part of the Greater Toronto area, right into Highland Creek Valley, and we're known for inspiring, inclusive excellence. So that means we're offering academic programs of the highest quality which will motivate and challenge you as students. But it also means that we are giving you opportunities to develop your skills.
In multiple avenues he want you to grow not only academically inside the classroom, but we also want you to grow outside of the classroom and develop your personal skills as well. We really pride ourselves in creating a welcoming an inclusive and safe community for our students, and you'll find that we are one of the most vibrant and diverse campuses in North America.
So in terms of our stem programs, what you need to keep in mind is that at the Scarborough campus we actually organize our programs under various admission categories very similar to youth team Mississauga. With our admission categories, it means that we grouped similar program areas together, so we'll make it very convenient for you when you're doing your research. For example, if you're interested in anything at all related to computer science, it's going to be in the mission category of computer science life Sciences.
That's where you're going to find all of those science programs that focus on studying things which are alive. So programs like human biology, cell and molecular biology, neuroscience that will all fall under the life Sciences field. Similarly, physical and environmental Sciences. That's where you'll find program options which are looking at nonliving aspects of science. So that would include your physics program, astronomy, environmental geoscience, etc. Lots to choose from in terms of the emissions category, and Floyd is going to drop the link in there, where you'll be able to find out.
More information about the individual programs at the Scarborough Campus. But one of the things you'll notice there on that chart is a lot of our programs are available as Co op options, and that's what I really want to focus my time on, because experiential learning is what makes you the Scarborough unique within the University of Toronto landscape. We really focus on ensuring that our students not only get a solid academic foundation, so that means you're learning in your classes, in your lectures, in your labs.
Flloyd Noronha
05:20:13 PM
You can learn more about U of T Scarborough programs here: https://www.utsc.utoronto.ca/admissions/programs-overview
Tutorials etc. But it also means that we want to give you training and experience in the real world and one of the ways that we do this is with our Co op programs. We are the only used to campus to offer formal Co op programs in Arts, Science and business options. There's about 54 different program options when you are in a coop program, it means you're going to be going to school. Getting your academic learning and also going unpaid Co op work terms that will compliment your studies.
So if you are a computer science Coop student, you're taking courses in software engineering in information systems, database management, etc. And then you're also going to get a chance to work in that field of computer science. Similarly, if you were a psychology Co op student, you'd be taking courses about develop developmental psychology, clinical psychology, mental health studies, and similarly working in that field of psychology. So really great advantage.
Flloyd Noronha
05:21:12 PM
What kind of Co-ops are available? Find some great examples here: https://www.utsc.utoronto.ca/admissions/about-co-op
For our students, because it means that you're learning your subject matter in a deeper way, you're developing your skills and experiences further, and that's what employers are looking for. You also get to network with employers before you graduate University, and I find this is a really great way for students to figure out what kind of career options they want to have. And of course, you're getting paid when you go on your Co op work terms. So great way to finance your education now if you're not in a coop program, there's still lots of other ways that you can develop.
These additional skills so that could be done through research that's working directly with professors and their research labs is also through our field courses. So earlier Deborah mentioned that the landscape of the UTM campus is a great Learning Laboratory for science students, and it's the same thing for the Scarborough campus being on the Highland Creek Valley means that you have access to really beautiful 300 acres of greenspace in which a lot of our field courses are conducted. So in addition to that, there's lots of opportunities with study abroad and service learning.
Horses and so on. So before I finish up and move things over on to my next collie, I do want to let you know that being at the Scarborough campus means that you're going to be in a supportive environment. And as I mentioned, we really care about you being successful both academically as well as personally and so lots of different resource is available for our students for them to meet their highest potential. We have our equity, diversity and inclusion office which is working with staff, faculty and students year long. We really want to create.
Spaces where everyones points of views and lived experiences are welcomed. We also have our Department of student experience and well being and they really focus on creating those Co curricular moments so that that that part of your University experience when you're outside of the classroom. That's what we're focusing on. So if you want to get involved in our academic in our money academic mentorship program and work with local black students in our neighborhood, you'll be able to do that. If you want to join student groups and student club so it's fit your interest.
You'll have an opportunity to do that. There's also opportunities to be part of our first year mentoring programs in our leadership programs on campus, as well as gain access to the wide array of student support services that are available for you, so that could be anything from her academic advising and Career Center. The writing center to accessibilities services to our health and Wellness. The list goes on and on, so I really hope I get a chance to connect with you throughout the rest of the academic year. Do check out the UFT scarbo website. We've got a lot of virtual opportunities.
Which you can learn more about us, but for now I'm going to turn things over to my colleague Aaron Wang from engineering.
Thank you Kimmy and thank you Lydia for inviting us to present at today's session. My name is Erin, weighing in here representing the fact we've applied science and engineering at the University of Toronto. We are a small factory on the Saint George campus so Saint George campus is located in downtown Toronto. It is in a main thing urban environment. We are proud of our diversity at engineering. Not only are.
As the engineering program, do we have 40% women engineers joining our first year class for the past several years? We also have students. 30% of our students joining us from international destinations as well. So as Kimmy said, we celebrate the breath of lived experiences of our students and also uniquely how these lived experiences contribute to the engineering design and problem solving process, which is very much. I think the advantages our students have going into the workforce of having learned from their peers.
And even contributed to the learning of their peers.
We offer two curricular pathways, so the first one is our core programs, a corporate program or programs are traditional engineering programs, so programs like Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, for example. These programs are designed for students to enter industry directly. So if you're looking to complete a four year program and enter the workforce.
Flloyd Noronha

Here is a good place to start your research into Engineering at U of T: https://discover.engineering.utoronto.ca/
As an engineer, this is the program for you. These programs you actually enter the program directly in your first year, so there is no general first year by default. However, if you want to opt for general first year, we offer a program called track one undeclared, where students are able to complete the same theoretical foundation as any core program student would, while taking an extra course that helps them Orient themselves to the different engineering disciplines, and you are guaranteed a transfer into.
Any of the core programs at the end of your first year giving good act on extending.
The second curricular pathway for us is engineering science, so this program is very different from our core programs in that it is a research driven program. So there's an accelerated academic foundation in your first two years where you cover the same academic concepts as a for your core program would. While going into third year, you choose an engineering science major to pursue as a research topic, so things like math, stats, and finance, artificial intelligence, robotics, etc. Where you're looking at what.
Next, in the field of engineering, about 50% of our graduates mentioning science actually go on into research careers in grad school instead of directly into industry. So that's the comparison between the two programs as well. Pursuing to want to customize their degrees at engineering, our students are are.
We are able to opt into a PE Co op program so we do offer a call program. It is not mandatory. Students opt into the program either during the application process or once they are students. Students can take up to 2020 months of work experience in two different terms. So one optional four month term at the end of your second year and a longer 16 months term at the end of your third year. That allows you to really immerse yourself within an engineering project really get that work experience that you need.
Additionally, you can also add on minors and certificates. Things like engineering business where students can take Robin Commerce courses alongside their engineering degree or minors in music performance or artificial intelligence or forensics engineering.

Explore the community at Engineering: uofteng.ca?/studentlife?
Our community really is unparalleled. Engineering students take such pride in how spirited they are. In addition to their challenging workload, they really, really dedicate themselves to having fun on the side as well. Things like our sketch comedy show school night every year that seems put on our design, teams were quite unique students to participate in our solar racing car team. For example, go to Australia every year. I think they just.
Won this competition this year. My favorite is the canoe where mostly civil engineering students sort of build literal concrete canoe and try to sort of breaks it with other universities. So it involves a lot of your actually academic curricular stuff. But it is an extracurricular activity.

I want to highlight for black students a core part of the student life at Uta. Engineering is the National Society of Black Engineers, Nesby for short, and as the really brings together of the black community within engineering and also does outreach programs for GTA students as well. So if you are in Toronto and you want to participate in some of these high school programming, go to their website and see if something is of interest to you.
And last but not least, I want to highlight our student support.

Get to know NSBE: http://nsbe.sa.utoronto.ca/
There are, you know, a whole list of student support services for all youth programs. But basically I want to highlight a couple things. One thing is the first. Your office, which is a proactive first transition support service. So you get you get paired with an academic advisor in your first year who actually reaches out to you after every midterm to see if you need support and to see, for example if your grade point dropped a little bit, you know to see if you needed any additional support.
And that's part of the reason that we have such a high student success rate, 95% retention rate from first to second year is one of the highest among our peer institutions in Canada to specific people that I wanted to highlight, Professor Shokrollah is our backline residence at trust, not resting. So for students who are not commuting and perhaps living on residence, Chestnut residence is often the first choice. Residence for engineering students. Professor Akbar Allah. Actually, as you can see, hangs up with you. He lives on residence with his wife.

That's a great opportunity for our seems to build community on the engineering floors as well. Doctor McLeod Burke is our inclusion in transition adviser as well as the teams advisor on black conclusion. So he is an alumni of Youth Gainsharing. He brings his experience and education to our community to ensure inclusivity and aakriti access for future students like you, but also for our current students as well. So that's something for sure too.
Pay attention to so I hope that was helpful information for you. Right now I'm going to pass it on to my colleague, Ting from the factory right science.
K thanks Aaron. Hello everyone, my name is Tim. I'm a recruitment officer in the fact of Arts and science. Ask my colleagues just mentioned we offer stem programs at all three campuses and each campus also offers its unique programs. So as in George campus, there are three admission categories toward honor. Better of Science degree. So the first one is our computer science program. So under computer science you can pick a computer science or data science specialist. So English and math are required to be considered for this program.
And also we do require supplemental application to support your application. So in this computer science supplemental application, it consists of four personal short answer questions, so we won't ask you any technical questions like a C programming code. What we want to know is why you choose computer science program and the in this application is a great place where you can show us your unique attributes and skills.
And this application is also not timed so you can always see the questions 1st and come back to this application when you're ready with your answers. When it comes to life Sciences program, so some of the unique programs offered here are animal Physiology, pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacology and etc. So English and math are required to be considered for admission to this admission category. However, depends on the program you want to study on our admission bullington you can find.
The other products that may be required for the program and their life Sciences admission category. So we may ask for biology or chemistry depends on the program you will be applying to and also if you are interested in physical and mess, some of the unique programs offered here actuarial science. If you are interested in pure maths and pure science program and we have Nano Science which is a joint program with the National University of Singapore. So just to name a few, the projected required for this programs.

Dive into all available programs in the Faculty of Arts & Science! https://www.artsci.utoronto.ca/future/academic-opportunities/explore-our-programs
Our English and the mass again depends on the program that you will be applying to. Biology, chemistry and physics may be required in addition to English and that so if you choose any of these programs in the fact of art and science on Saint George campus, you were also belong to a smaller community called colleges. So this color system is unique to the art and science students on Saint George campus. There are seven different colleges and every college provides residents, academic counseling and social activities.

He said that we also have a variety of workshops, programs, and camps offered for high school students. So for you guys, if you are interested in the stem programs.
So see U of TC stands for support, engage experience, Cup is and you access program we just launched in 2019. Good afternoon everyone, I'm I'm so happy to be here today and to speak to you all about the faculty of kinesiology and physical education here at the University of Toronto. As Ting said, my name is Sophie Harding and I am the recruitment officer for the faculty of kinesiology. So what is kinesiology? The study of movement, performance and function, and that's what we do throughout the program, and this is what we study.
And the trick to understanding the effects of kinesiology and physical education is you know, how do we? How do we look at human performance and function and how do we study Commission aladji Here at UFT? And I think what's important couple of things is that to understand about our program is that we really look at kinesiology across three major disciplines. So we looking theology under the discipline of the biophysical which will encompass courses like in anatomy.
Here at FT we do our students study anatomy labs with human cadavers in their first year.
Courses like bio mechanics and motor learning Physiology. Those kinds of under that discipline of biophysical. We also look at kinesiology in the more behavioral aspect. Looking at courses like stress and coping and adaptive physical activity to name a few. And the last discipline that we study kinesiology under is physical, cultural studies and really looking at Kinesiology, movement, sport physical activity in a more societal sense. We look at, you know.
Issues around race with the issues around gender. We look at International Development through sports. We look at ethics, synonym review and I think it's important to understand when we look at issues around some is that we really try. I think what separates us an what's unique about us is it's really about embedding equity, diversity and inclusion awareness around the framework of sport, exercise in physical activity and that's what we do here.
In the fact of kinesiology and physical education, we so you know in looking at other disciplines, we try to incorporate equity and diversity. Inclusion were really strong on learning through experience or really hands-on to very hands-on degree. So lots of labs you know, I talked about another greenhouse, but throughout your degree you're going to have Physiology labs. You can have concussion labs. We have many opportunities in research, available tourist agency really work with different professors and.
Really get you know your hands out some of the leading research and kinesiologist happening in the world. We have a wonderful, engaging community. We are a small faculty where about 250 intake each year and we are known as the KP family. Just because we tend to be very close and very tight knit and throat. You know the goal for us here at the kinesiologist to really make sure that throughout all aspects of our programming, whether it's on the academic side of the house or.

The Cooper liquor side of the house where we have, you know there's 44 birthday teams. For example, in many different ways to engage in terms of intramural sports or you know, whichever way you want to. We try to make sure that equity, diversity, inclusion is really a part of everything that we do, and so there's been many initiatives.
At our faculty, we have a year ago couple years ago went through the task force or racing engineer iti and we did many recommendations to our faculty to really make sure that talk about issues around equity and diversity, including across you know all aspects over faculty and and those recommendations are being implemented and we were really, you know, every time we were starting new programs and really trying to do some really creative things.

If you require closed captioning, you can click the button in the top right corner of your screen—it’s a small box that says “CC”. This will generate automatic captions for the entire session.
And programming around equity, diversity, inclusion, and so just to name a couple of few things that I wanted to touch on briefly, what we're doing in our faculty around salmon around after diversity inclusion is, for example, when you look at sort of the academic side of the house. We want to talk about, you know, really, for you know, providing for example, for our indigenous students, we provide individualize admission consideration for our. In addition as applicants.
I want to talk about our ideas. Lab lady I mentioned before in our opening about Janelle Joseph. Doctor Joseph is one of professors and she runs our ideas lab which is ingenuity, diaspore equity and enter racism in Sport Lab and doing a lot of really great working. A lot of great programming for students. We try to make sure that there are many different courses that are students are exposed to and that they can take that are really look at critically.
At issues around race and ingenuity. So for example we have courses like ethics and power and kinesiology and health setting. We have International Development through sport. We have raised an engineer Iti and physical culture just to name a few.
And part of our program is in their third and 4th year. We offer placement opportunities where you can get mentored by professionals in the field for up to 100 hours. And these placements are across the GTA and in. It's a really important for us to make sure that some of our placements really do reflect our student body and and have an equity diversity and inclusion focus as well. So for example, we have placement opportunities and indigenous sport and Wellness as a placement site.
Just to name just to name a few here. Now looking at our cocoa liquor side of the house, many different kinds of programming here for our students in many ways to get involved that we have in just a few of our programming that we have for students. We have merla program for our LG BT Q 2S plus communities. We have programming around diversity and equity and inclusion. We have a conference that we run every year.

Talk and create programming and voice their concerns and and move through in an equity through an equity diversity inclusion lens. So I'm not going to take too much more time. I just wanted to give you some idea of some of the things that are happening interfaculty. My contact information is on the screen. If you're interested in talking about kinesiology or you know really interested in having any questions, I'm happy to be able to provide that at anytime. And with that I'm going to pass things over back to at Lydia.
Thank you so much, that was that was like it was amazing. Alot of information I am sure and I know that you all want to get to your questions fairly quickly. We just have a little bit more to go through and I want to thank all of our presenters and they will definitely hang around to answer your questions at the end. I know you see time is ticking away. We're getting closer to five. If this takes us past five we will be here for another few minutes to ensure that we're getting to as many questions as we can. So let's talk a little bit about how we actually get you here with some of those financial supports that I know. Many of you are thinking about when you're thinking about paying for you now.
Versity that's always a big question. I know it was one for me, so I always want to make sure that I highlight that as well.
Just a second, just gotta get my computer going here, excellent.
I think before I get into all of the financial pieces, I really want to highlight this student who has made great resource is make bring made great use of his resources on his campus. Siobhan Riley. So Siobhan recently graduated from the Scarborough campus with a bachelors of science during his time at UTC, he received a number of bursaries in addition to working full time, he made the most of his University experience by working with the UTC incubator the hub to launch a natural skin care product, line name, norm, and as you can see, Norma's on his shirt sleeves even got branded shirts.
Flloyd Noronha
05:45:41 PM
You can watch Chevon’s pitch for U of T’s Entrepreneurial Week here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABJmkXt6Qo8?
Which stands for natural organic matters. The line made over 2500 sales and adjusted first year and we can watch a pitch for Savons Entrepreneurial. He actually had to do a pitch for his business for entrepreneurial week here at UT. And so Floyd's going to put the link to the video in the chat. It's really short. It's maybe a minute, but it gives you an idea as to how is a science student as a black science student at the University of Toronto? You really have the ability to do such unique things so you have the opportunity to work with an incubator to start your own business so you're able to marry business.
Along with your science background, in this case, Siobhan was able to pair his chemistry interest with the business model and launched his own product line, and so we're really proud to see alumni doing some really unique things through some of the resources that are available at U of T now to speak to some of the resources that are are going to be of interest to you and to speak to some of those financial resources. I want to talk a little bit about our rewards profiles and financial support at the University of Toronto. So there's a number of ways to gain access to scholarships at UT.
Simply because we have one of the largest scholarship banks in Canada. Some scholarships are going to be based on just your grades and those are what we call our automatically assessed for merit based scholarships. So what's great about these is that you don't have to do anything, it's just based on the grades that you apply within. Based on that transcript we consider you for those those scholarships. Secondly, we have the awards profile and this is really your gateway to all other admissions scholarships at the University of Toronto you get access to this profile after applying on the AC. It's really important that you self identify.
On this awards profile is being a black student as there are scholarships specific to black students that you can get access to.
Flloyd Noronha
05:47:21 PM
You can review the Awards explorer to learn about all of scholarships here: https://awardexplorer.utoronto.ca/ and read our New Financial Guidebook where you can learn about Jamar’s story here: https://future.utoronto.ca/university-life/equity-outreach-support/financial-aid/?
?
Now Floyd is going to put the link in the box for the awards Explorer because right now, even though you're in high school, you can actually go in the awards Explorer and start to search. What scholarships are of interest to you. So you may be interesting chemistry. You could just type in chemistry into the search box and you will find any scholarships that are associated with chemistry. You can type in black, you could type in Scarborough, you could type in arts and science. It will show you scholarships at the undergraduate level for all of our programs, and so that's really unique. Are really great tool for high school students. Start seeing, start seeing what's available at you T.
Now, our largest bulk of scholarship, so sorry our largest local funds are in needs based grants and you taps is really a unique program to University of Toronto. If the University of Toronto advanced planning for students and this is available to students in particular domestic students. If once you apply for your provincial funding or for OSAP as I see most of your from Ontario and also it doesn't cover the full cost of your tuition, the University of Toronto will step in and cover the remainder of your tuition free of costs. That's a very unique program to use. T and it's our commitment to students.

To ensure that finances won't be a barrier to pursuing Postsecondary Education. Now I do know that there are some international students that are joining us. I do want to clarify for you that this is specifically for domestic Canadian students, permanent residents or students that are here through refugee status. So I do want to clarify that for everyone, for international students, we are a publicly funded institutions, so we don't necessarily. We aren't able to provide that same type of funding. But for all of the domestic students watching these are some of the scholarships that are available for you.
And just keep in mind as an international student, you will be considered for the first level of scholarship that I spoke about, which is the automatically assess scholarship. So I just want to speak to the breath of funding that's available to you across all three campuses at the University of Toronto, and to ensure that you know what's that you have certain supports. Now, I do want to mention quickly to my right is Jamar. Norrick and Tamar is actually one of the winners of the National Scholarship. This is a Canadian, so this is a scholarship for Canadian students. It's our largest scholarship and covers all four years void will put in the chat box.
Flloyd Noronha

New Financial Guidebook where you can learn about Jamar’s story here: https://future.utoronto.ca/university-life/equity-outreach-support/financial-aid/? ?
A link to our new financing your UC education guidebook. This is a really great book to help you understand how you navigate you. These financial network and getting the most out of scholarships and bursaries now in that same look it you will be able to region Mars. Full story and you'll get to learn a little bit more about him and how he came to being a recipient of the national scholarship. Now I'm going to move right into our application process. So how are you actually applying to U of T now? We've heard from all of our faculties but you still need to submit.
The first application in order to start considering the University of Toronto, so we have a two step application process. First you're going to submit your own Lacey application. Now I know for many of you here that are joining us in Ontario, that application is recently opened and you should be getting your what your opinions and information from your counselors or from the oasi within the next few weeks. Now once you submit that first oasi application about a week or two later, you'll get an email from you T thanking you for applying and it will give you access to your join. You've T portal.
If I leave you with anything here today is to know that you're doing you. The portal is crucial to your application to the University of Toronto. It is where you will manage all other aspects of your application throughout the admissions process.
Now when we're talking about applying to UFT honest, often many of the questions that we will receive will be about how many times can I apply to the University of Toronto and this grid really helps to explain that. So if you are interested in the University of Toronto and you've heard from many of our faculties here today, you can apply to the University of Toronto up to a maximum of three times, but only once per campus or faculty. So as an example, if you were interested in maybe life Sciences, you could apply once to the faculty of Arts and science at the Saint George campus.
You could apply once to Mississauga for life Sciences and you could apply once to scarbo for life Sciences and those would be your three options at the University of Toronto. Now say for instance you are interested in kinesiology and maybe engineering and maybe also interested in life Sciences. You can apply to the faculty of Applied Science and Engineering, Faculty of Arts and Sciences to Saint George campus and to the faculty of kinesiology. So you have the ability to really make some certain choices up to a maximum of three. So to clarify that that is once per highlighted area on the screen now unique this year.
If you have applied now, if you are interested in different areas, just keep in mind you can only apply once to that faculty, so ensure that you are keeping that in mind and Engineering is a little bit unique because after you can get access to their supplementary application where you'll have the ability to add a few other options within the faculty.
Now, this admissions information that I have here is pretty much geared toward an Ontario audience, because I would say 98% of our attendees today are here in Ontario. However, generally for admission, when we're thinking about admission to the University of Toronto, we're really looking at your grade eleven Grade 12 grades. We're looking at consistency across those two years and will probably be paying close attention to the prerequisites that you need for the programs, and I know that Deborah, as well as Ting, spoke to a lot of the prerequisites are required for their programs, so just keep that in mind when you're thinking of applying to the University.
Flloyd Noronha
05:52:50 PM
You can find the requirements for your region of the world here: https://future.utoronto.ca/apply/requirements/
And thinking about which programs you may be eligible for and which ones you may be competitive for. So that's one thing to keep in mind on the screen you will see admissions information specifically for Ontario crowd just because they're the vast majority of folks that are here, so I hope that that information on the screen is clear for Ontario students, and if not, again, we're going to get into the Q&A in literally 2 minutes.
Now I do want to speak to one part of the application that we didn't spend a lot of time on today, but I think it's important to highlight for the vast majority of our programs at the University of Toronto, there we're just looking at your grades when we're looking to consider you for admission. However, the 13 programs on your screen are the only programs out of our nearly 700 program options that require a supplementary application. Now you may be wondering what does? What is a supplementary application? It's literally in the title. It is to supplement so it is in addition to your grades.
And here we would like to see a little bit more from you about who you are, why you want to pursue this program, what interests you in this area, and what are some of your experience. Some of your experiences outside of the classroom. So are you involved in your community? Have you been volunteering? Have you maybe started your own project or startup that you want to speak to? Those are some of the things that you could speak to in some of these supplementary applications. And again, you still need to be competitive academically, so you have to have strong grades. But we also want to see that you produce a strong supplementary application.
Flloyd Noronha
05:54:37 PM
While Lydia wraps up, feel free to start sending in your questions!
As well now, before we get into the Q&A, I want to give everyone a bit of an overview as to what your grade 12 year will look like. So you again, oh, USC applications are open now. You will first submit your oasi application within the next few weeks, sometime between October and November. For Ontario students. I know many of you like to submit your application in December and January. We highly encourage that you submit your applications early. It gives you more time to complete those supplementary applications. Another another.
Actually we need to provide now again after you submit your oasi application, we're going to go over to the second level, which is you're going to log into your join. You have T portal, and that is where you're going to manage the rest of your application. That is where you will submit your supplementary applications. It is where you'll be able to access your online profile for engineering. So for engineering students will come into the joint portal and then you'll get access in your link out to the engineering supplementary application portal. Now in addition to that I spoke about the awards profile that is your gateway to skull other scholarships at the University of Toronto.
You will also complete that and get access to that in your join you with T portal, and for those of you who want to come and live with us because residents is guaranteed for our high school students coming straight out of high school, you'll want to submit your residence profile no later than March 31st in order to hold the space in residence and then for all of you when you're ready to accept your offer, you will be accepting your offer of admission sometime around June 1st for our domestic, for Ontario students and for all other students that are applying through the 1:05 application, you'll be accepting your offer around May 1st.
So that gives you a bit of an idea as to what your grade 12 year will look like and the timelines that are available to you now we're going to head into our Q&A and I want to thank you all for listening so much we're going to head into Q&A, so feel free to start sending in your questions. I think we'll probably head till maybe about 5:10 PM. I hope that my panelists are happy to join us here. We're going to hell about 5:10 so that we can answer some Q&A, so feel free to start sending in your questions. You have a general admissions question.
Alfred
05:56:48 PM
are all students eligible for utaps and will residence still begiven considering the pandemic?
I'd be happy to answer it if you have a question for a specific faculty that spoke, please feel free to let me just put that in the chat. I have a question for X Faculty. I'll have the jump back on screen to support us with that question, so I see Alfred has already submitted a question and I want to encourage you start sending your questions into the chat now so that we can get to them. So we have. Alfred has a question, are all students eligible for you taps and will residents still be given? Considering the pandemic, that is a great question. Alfred and I will. I will actually, I'll answer that question on my own.
So in regards to all students eligible for you taps, you are eligible for you tabs if you've applied to OSAP or to your provincial funding, you have to be a Canadian student to access you tops and for your second question in regards to residents, we do have some students. A small percentage of students who are currently living in residence. They are socially distance, they're living. There's a lot of precautions that are being taken due to the pandemic. I won't be able to say what will happen for fall 2021, but I encourage you to continue to stay up to date on our admissions website.
That's where you will continue to get updated information as to what is happening on campus and what is happening with remote learning or in person classes and labs, as well as with residents. So continue to check out our website and Floyd will actually populate a link in the chat so that you can get access to future.utoronto.ca where you will get up to the information about what changes throughout the admissions process as well as what is changing with the pandemic. Things are changing all the time.

Is there a Health Science program at U of T?
Please continue to submit your questions everyone we, if we are there aren't any questions that we will definitely wrap up early, but please feel please do so this is a rare opportunity to get all of us from all the different faculties available. So happy to have you join us.

All things related to U of T and Covid related concerns as well: https://future.utoronto.ca/apply/
Um faith has a faith has a great question here. Is there a Health Science program at U of T and I think what I will do is I will actually invite on Debra Kiyomi and Ting to answer this question as well as Sophie. If the four of you can jump back on because I want you to sort of speak to the idea around the difference between life science and Health Science and then Sophie. If you could also speak to a little bit about kinesiology and how kinesiology is seen within the health field.
Kyomi please go ahead first.
Sure already, so that's a very common question that we get asked quite a bit. Feet and it raises the point that depending on the University, your research that you're looking at, we're going to call our programs different names, and I have different terminology which.
Often means the same thing. For example, at some universities their programs are called Health Sciences, whereas at other universities we call it life Sciences. So whenever students ask if we have Health Science programs at UTSCI, say yes, we do. It's called life Sciences because the same kind of subject matter options like Biology, Molecular Biology, neuroscience, human biology, etc are going to be housed under that field of life. Science is also at the Scarborough campus. We have a program.
Old health studies and Health Studies is quite unique. You can do it either as a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor Science degree and it actually looks at the study of the healthcare system. So it's not not, not necessarily. If you want to become a doctor or a nurse or physiotherapist, but instead if you're looking at something like Hospital Administration or healthcare management, healthcare policy development, etc.
Flloyd Noronha

You can explore all of our undergraduate programs here: https://future.utoronto.ca/academics/undergraduate-programs/
Tim, did you want to add anything to this?
I think my colleague Cleome have covered everything, but I just want to say I just want to mention we do get this question a lot. We every different University. We may name our program differently so I will say if you are interested in how science we have it at you, but we have it at all three campuses.
The program you want to study are covered our under our life Sciences program. We just named differently but depends on the program you want to study and also if your career path that you want to pursue professional degrees like you want to go to medicine. Those are the programs you can take our life Sciences program to give you a better foundation to prepare you to get in a career in this field.
Oh OK, well thanks Lydia. So kinesiology is the profession by itself within the healthcare field. So it's a professional program. And so if you choose to go on to become etiology, you can actually write the exam at the end of your four years to become arcane, which is a registered kinesiologist. Now are students who study kinesiology.
Go into many different careers. One you can stop and become a kinesiology. Kinesiology about many students doesn't go on and different things like they want to go to. Medicine, physiotherapy, occupational therapy.

What would the general cost of living in residence be for domestic students?
Belinda
06:01:48 PM
Is there a co-op for pyschology?
Sport like it sports therapy, just it it's on and on and on. Our students go on to do a wide variety of different things, including graduate programs, so it's definitely a different kind of career within the health care industry and it really exposes you to many different avenues that you can go into if that's what you're interested in.
Flloyd Noronha
06:02:15 PM
@Belinda At U of T Scarborough we do offer co-op opportunities in Psychology! https://www.utsc.utoronto.ca/artscicoop/why-choose-arts-science-co-op
So at you TM we do have biology for Health Sciences and once again it is the study of humans within medicine within healthcare. So if it is something that you're interested in, we most certainly do have that program. I just wanted to add. Oftentimes I get that question because someone is interested in getting into medicine.
I think one of the important things for you to consider is that you don't actually have to be in a specific life science program in order to be considered for Med school. So what you do need for Med school when it comes to the Sciences or two life science courses, not necessarily a life science program. However, it is important to ensure that you are involved with research. University of Toronto does have research opportunities for students that start in second year. But yes, we do have biology for Health Sciences.

@ Radiya - All of the campuses off the same high quality education and U of T degree.
Yes, sure yes yes we have Co op for psychology. In fact we have Co op for the vast majority of our stem programs and probably the best thing to do is go to that website that Floyd had posted in the chat. If they're working for an organization, whether that's in a science field or an education or in finance and banking in any part of the corporate environment, some of our students are working from home. We also have a number of our students who are also working.

On site at their employer because their employer is deemed an essential service. And so from the spring and summer and now into the fall work term period, some of our students are working with their employers and following all of the health and safety regulations that are specified by the province of Ontario and also by their employer as well.
Question you think Lydia? I'm checking.

@ Nelson - Students can also compete the Prospective Athelete Form: https://varsityblues.ca/sb_output.aspx?form=3
Everybody out yes. I thought IDK recruitment so the way that it works at the University of Toronto is that we we have coaches that do a lot of recruiting across all three campuses for our different athletes. For varsity athletes. So if you are an athlete and if you're interested in in playing Versity at the University of Toronto, I encourage you. If you have not been speaking with the coach.

thank you so much for this! i have to go, but i hope everyone has a great day!! :)
Please do that immediately and the way that you get in touch is that you go on the Varsity Blues website and asking Floyd if he could have put that up right now that website and there is a section there. Recruit where you can get in touch with you, talk you tell them what sport you're interested in and it'll go right to the coach really, really important. It's never too early to do that. We were very, very active coaches that are out recruiting constantly. For our varsity programs.

Thanks for joining Radiya - have a great evening!
And then the next question I always get about the next is what happens with athletic scholarships and that is a one area that is handled strictly by the coaches as well. OK, so they handle athletic scholarships and Auten all the recruiting around or athletes.

All that's available to you and you can reach the scientists. This is where you'll see mock lectures from some of our professors, and I'm putting the link in the chat right now where you could actually register for fall camp asleep. It's going to start this Saturday and that's what it brings me to our last section. So keep in touch with us. I think everyone has said that and reiterated it multiple times. Our fall campus we started starts this Saturday. That's a great place to come in. See students as well as learn about some of the availabilities in addition to all of the requirements that we spoke to today.

Fall Campus Week registration is now live! You can start building your schedule here: https://discover.utoronto.ca/fall-campus-week
It's a good place to really hear from students and are currently in the programs as well as from some of our professors who actually teaching in those areas that may help you to see if you're in that course is for you and always keep in mind that at the University of Toronto you can specialize double major as you could see an engineering engineering sense cannot on minors, and whether you're in an arts and science program across our three campuses, you have the ability to either do a specialist where you're spending one area, a double major, where you could study biology, and maybe study a little bit of history as well.
And you can also add on a minor to any of them any of your program, so that really lends to the flexibility that's available at you T. So simao we're here to support you to navigate and figure out what you like from what you don't like, and that really goes for everyone on this chat. So again, stay in touch with us. Those are websites. That's my email. You will get an email from me after this session just saying thank you for joining us. If you have any pressing questions that you didn't want to post here, feel free to send them to me. Happy to answer them as well as if you wanted to connect with any of the folks that spoke today in any of the faculties.
Send me an email. I'm happy to connect you to any of them. To further support you in your ventures to UTI. I want to thank you all for hanging around for a little bit of extra time to get through those questions. Today's session was jam packed and it will live as a recording on our web page so we will send that out along as well. So if you have friends that want to hear about this, send them back to our web page. Will have that recording. Thank you all for joining us and to all our black students that joined us today. I really hope to see you on campus next fall. Hopefully we can be in person and we're here to support you and help you to get here.
Thank you to our amazing panelists and they made everyone have a great evening. Take care and watch those heads, they say.
