U of T Talks:  "The Walking Wounded"

When people think about gun violence, they often think about fatal shootings.  But advancements in emergency trauma care have improved the odds of surviving a shooting.  These days about 20% of shootings are fatal.  What happens to survivors after the fact?  How does getting shot impact their health?  And what can we as a society do to better meet the needs of the wounded and their families?  This talk will draw from ethnographic work in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, which at the time of this research had the highest homicide rate amongst large cities in the United States.  I will sketch the struggles that victims and their families endure in the aftermath and show how some of the same lessons can be applied to the Canadian context.
